Being in the Army my family did not have much money to go around with 5 children. But our parents, especially my Mother, tried to expose us to as much of the world as they could. We had many great camping trips around Europe during my Dad's second tour there in the 50's. One of those was to Italy to all the historic sights. Rome, Pisa, Venice1`, the Vatican and Lake Como. I have many great memories of those family trips. Looking back at the pictures, the main thing I notice now is the lack of traffic and people.
I blame my wanderlust on my mother. At the ripe age of 6 weeks, she put me in a straw basket like a puppy, and we traveled by train and troop ship from Germany to the U.S. Thus was the beginnings of my wanderings that continue to this day.
Thank you Mom.

I love this post. When Abigail was 12 I told her she could no longer have Christmas gifts that depreciated in value. She went away and thought about that and cam back and asked, " That means nothing from the mall, right?" I said yes and she looked depressed and wandered off to her room. A few hours later she came back and announced, "okay then. I want to go to Alaska." And so we went and we traveled cheaply in out of the way fashion. From then on, every single year, we took a trip to some pretty far away place, always on a single mom shoestring and those have been, we both agree, the best adventures of our lives. And look at her now, with her remarkable spirit of adventure. Your's is one of your most endearing and interesting qualities and it makes me very happy to think about mother's inspiring this in their children. Hurrah for Ma Wilson!
